The Real USS Kidd DD-661

The United States Navy commissioned USS Kidd on April 23, 1943. The Navy named the destroyer for Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who lost his life aboard USS Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Soon afterward, the ship’s crew embraced a pirate theme inspired by Captain William Kidd. They flew the Jolly Roger from the mast and added pirate artwork to the forward funnel. Consequently, the ship earned the memorable nickname “Pirate of the Pacific.”

During World War II, USS Kidd served throughout the Pacific. For example, the destroyer supported operations near Wake Island, Rabaul, Tarawa, Guam, Leyte, and Okinawa. The crew screened aircraft carriers and battleships, rescued downed aviators, bombarded enemy positions, and defended American task forces against air attacks.

However, the ship faced its greatest test on April 11, 1945. During the Okinawa campaign, a kamikaze aircraft struck USS Kidd and caused severe damage. The attack killed and wounded many sailors. Nevertheless, the surviving crew controlled the fires, kept the ship afloat, and brought the damaged destroyer to safety.

After repairs, USS Kidd returned to active service during the Korean War. Altogether, the destroyer earned eight battle stars for World War II and four more for service in Korea.
